Doldrums

A state of inactivity or stagnation; or a dull, depressed mood.

“Rhymember”: Mondays are ho-hum and put me in the doldrums.

Sarah asked Joe if she could pull him out of the doldrums by giving him half of her burrito.

Portent

An indication or omen of something about to happen, especially something momentous.

“Rhymember”: The grey skies were a portent; we realized we needed more tent!

Sarah’s pissy look was portent, causing Joe to change the subject.

Recuse

To reject or challenge (typically a judge, juror, or lawyer) as disqualified to act, especially because of interest or bias.

“Rhymember”: He was recused because he refused to be impartial.

Because Sarah was recused from jury duty, she asked Joe to take a road trip to the beach.

Indolent

Disposed to avoiding exertion; slothful.

“Rhymember”: She did the work, so she was innocent of being indolent.

Remembering Sarah hated indolence, Joe thought he’d better clean his apartment before she came over.

Coffer

A box or chest for holding valuables.

“Rhymember”: Whatever jewelry I offer, put it in your coffer!

Joe found the coffer he used as a child for his baseball cards.

Wonk

A person who studies a subject in an excessively assiduous and thorough manner.

“Rhymember”: The nerd was selling bumper stickers: “Honk if you’re a wonk!”

Sarah asked Joe how he could stand to listen to political wonks on talk radio all day!

Quaff

To drink a beverage, especially an intoxicating one, with hearty enjoyment.

Rhymember: Back off! I’d like to quaff my cocktail in peace!

Joe watched Sarah quaff her green beer.

Invective

Violent denunciation or reproach; a railing accusation.

“Rhymember”: He was full of invective cause his new phone was defective.

Joe let out a stream of invective when his team lost in the tournament.

Mollify

To appease, pacify, or soften.

“Rhymember”: The loser hadn’t qualified and needed to be mollified.

Joe tried to mollify Sarah after her humiliating karaoke performance.

Kerfuffle

A fuss; commotion.

Use it today: The protestors caused a kerfuffle in front of the federal building.

Joe and Sarah laughed as the foul ball hit into the stands created a wild kerfuffle.
